I remember this! From my childhood — my older parents kept lots of magazines, newspapers and other momentos from the era. This was among them, and some work Szyk did in Collier’s, I believe. The style definitely got me interested in the era. Good stuff, thanks.

Thank you, Peter, for resurrecting and explaining these wonderful illustrations by Arthur Szyk. It’s amazing today to think that images like these could be used, were used, to sway the opinions of millions. How could that happen today? When American newspapers and media channels seem singularly focused on profits for their owners from “clicks”? Perhaps we need a new “reality TV” show in which characters representing the world’s nations “vote each other off the island”. How today can we make people wake up?
