Industry of the Beavers (1731)
Beavers work with military precision to build dam below Niagara Falls.
Inset from Map: “A new and exact map of the dominions of the King of Great Britain on ye continent of North America” by Herman Moll (1731)
A view of the industry of beavers of Canada in making dams to stop the course of rivers in order to form a great lake, about which they build their habitations. To affect this they fell large trees with her teeth in such a manner is to make them come across the rivers to lay the foundation of the dams. They make mortar, work up, and finish the whole with great order and wonderful dexterity. The beavers have two doors to their lodges, one to the water and the other to the land side. According to French accounts.
